Inexplicable Things Apothecary

Hey Swamp Babies –

Ya’ll ever wonder why we use what we use in a spell?

A good spell or charm recipe should have specific items that are chosen for their exact ability to do a job. For instance, this first spell is something we call Cypress Whispers. It’s a wonderful little effective charm to help spark fortune and luck. We focus on ingredients that are used in a lot of Cajun folklore.

Here’s one for ya, called a Cypress Whispers Charm.

Luck moves like water through the swamp—quiet, steady, and full of mystery. Here’s a charm to carry when you need doors to open and things to go your way:

Roots and Bits:
• Sliver of cypress bark
• 3 strands of Spanish moss
• Pinch of sassafras leaf
• Twine or natural string

Bundle the moss and sassafras in the bark. Wrap it tight with twine, tying three knots. Whisper what you want luck to touch—your feet, your words, your path. Tuck it in your pocket or bag. Let it ride with you.

Replace with fresh bits every New Moon, or when it feels like the shine’s gone.

So, why are we using these specific items?

Cypress Bark – Cypress trees grow where others drown. In Cajun beliefs, they don’t just grow in the swamp either . . . they watch the swamp. These special trees are long, long-lived, deep-rooted, and tough as old boot leather. Their bark don’t bend easy. It carries the strength to hold fast when everything around you is sinking. It’s protection, strength, and old-as-dirt wisdom, that’s why we like to use it. It’s an anchor for the charm – gives it a spine and ties you into the land’s oldest protections. Around here, we say if you want something to stick, use cypress!

Spanish Moss (3 – 5 strands is perfect) – Now, this moss. . . It don’t grow just anywhere—it hangs where the spirits walk. The spirits ride on this stuff! It’s believed to be a direct connection between you and the unseen, to the spirit world, and the whispering winds that bring you omens. It’s soft but stubborn, and it’s good at catching what floats by—luck, signs, little blessings. It’s our belief that three strands is best when you are working on fortune, protection and blessings. Three strands are for balance and movement—one for the past, one for the present, one for where you’re headed.

Sassafras Leaf – Sassafras is the old Cajun’s cure-all – tea for your bones, charm for your luck and it’s pretty damn good in a drink, too. It brings a sweetness and favor, the kind of energy that makes folks say yes to you, makes the road rise up to meet you. It has, what we call, drawin’ power – it pulls good things toward you like your Ma-Ma’s gumbo pulls family to the dinner table! It’s the swamp’s version of sugar and spice.

Twine (Three Knots)
Three knots is what it takes. One to bind the charm. Two to promise it. And three to fix your intentions into the root. Say what you mean, and mean what you say. You whisper what you need with each knot, and you ain’t just talking to yourself—you’re talking to the land, to the spirits that ride moss and mist. That twine holds it all together, and those knots? They’re your promise to follow through.

That’s all there is to it.

This ain’t fancy magic.

It’s back porch, bare feet, mud-on-your-hands kind of work.
The kind that sticks.
The kind that listens when you speak.
