I am a Witch… and what’s a witch without a magickal familiar?

I was raised on a ranch – around animals and critters of all kinds. But, I can thank my father for my love of cats. As far back as I can remember, I have had a cat in my life. And, usually a Manx.

My current magickal partner is my cat, Rougarou. He is a black and white tuxedo Manx and is without a shadow of a doubt, magickal. He asks almost daily to get to my altar, which is hidden out of sight. Not by choice, but by necessity. My husband and I live in a very tiny space at the moment, and so every square inch is being used. Thankfully, I do have an altar that I do use regularly. He is right next to me whenever I make candles, or do any type of magickal workings. When I make gris gris and mojo hands, he is always right in the middle of the mix. The Rougarou

My husband often uses Runes for divination – and Rou showed an interest at a young age. I thought, why not tarot, too.

I usually wait until he is ready and lets me know… I will lay out the cards and allow him time to choose three. Now when I say choose… I don’t just let him step on them – he has to show a real interest. He will usually lie down and put paws on one. Sometimes he will lick or bite a particular card. He will nudge one. But it is always something other than just sitting or stepping on them. And three seems to be his number.

He is actually pretty adept at this and seems to take it pretty serious. The other evening, Kelly and I asked a particular question and Rou chose our three cards. Sure enough, all three were very in-tune with what we had asked and the reading answered some questions. Rou seems quite pleased with himself.

There will be more to come – along with photos. But if anyone would like The Rougarou to do a three card reading, please ask your questions. We will choose the appropriate evening, light a candle, and photos will be taken.

A Witch’s Voice…

I have been on my own personal path all my life. I wouldn’t necessarily say I follow a particular path or have a particular philosophy because I am so very eclectic and try to learn all I can about all traditions, faiths, and walks of life. I learn – and then I use that knowledge in a way that benefits me the most. This depends greatly upon my intentions and desired outcomes. Therefore, I do not believe that an individual must be confined to a particular philosophy or belief. If a Greek Goddess is perfect for a particular issue today, who says that I can’t call upon an Irish Goddess next week? Or Egyptian, or Norse, or Dianic, or even a Voodoo Lwa. It seems that many, not all, but many, Neo-Pagan philosophies try to cram everyone into a certain path or category. I have been told by individuals that I simply MUST choose a path… that I can’t worship a particular deity because I am was not raised in that tradition. I do not take kindly to being crammed into a particular mold.

Witch-casting-spell

As for the spells I cast, you will learn that I am truly a bit of a chaotic Witch. I am very non-traditional in the respect that I do not cast a circle, I do not call quarters, I do not take a ritual baths – I really do not do anything traditional, at all. I do invite any and all deities or spirits that wish to attend – and I ask that if they have something to say or point out during my castings, they please do so.  I do welcome the elements, and generally have a symbolic reflection of them on my altar. I do have a few favorite deities that I use much more than others – Hecate, Marie Laveau, etc. and so they, too, have representations on or near my altar, but that is about all.  I speak what I want, what I am trying to accomplish. I tend to explain the circumstances, and then specifically state my problem or the outcome I am seeking.  I speak with Deities and spirits as if we were having a conversation over tea.  At the end of the casting, I usually ask that any or all that feel they could be beneficial, please make it known, and I shall do my best to be open to interpretation and listening for their nudge.  I do not ask without understanding that my own effort is required.  I thank them all for attendance and bid them farewell.  A little grounding to get rid of any lingering energy and done!

Some witches are born with an ability to work candle magick. It just comes natural to them. Others are creative writers and their spells are amazing. Some are quite adept with herbs, resins and minerals. Some rely solely on divination for what they are seeking. And still, some, are quite powerful in a variety of ways. I, myself, didn’t realize what type of witch I was until I was in my mid to late 30’s. I am good with candles, herbs, animals and what have you, but my real power is in my voice. This means that I must be fairly emotionally connected to what I am casting, and I must verbally speak what I want. My magick rarely, if ever, fails me. But once I understood what type of Witch I truly was, I changed a few things about how I went about spells and voila! Things got so much more real! My spells were more powerful and the outcomes were realized much quicker.

Lunar Magick –

As we discussed this past week, the Moon can be an important factor in many things we do on a daily basis. It’s a symbol of nature’s cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth. It represents the feminine, change, and magick, in general.

When working any type of spell work, it is important to keep in mind the appropriate lunar phases (waxing, waning, Full, Dark, etc.). It can also be quite helpful to align your spell work so that it coincides with the appropriate astrological influences, as well.zodiac_wheel_by_bullet731108-d6594df

Moon in Aries: This is the best time to work spells that involve any form of leadership or authority. Rebirth and will power are also key. Healing rituals that focus on the face, head, and brain can be performed during this time.

Moon in Taurus: A perfect time to work spells for love, material acquisitions and real estate. Some forms of money work can also be successfully done during a Taurus moon. Healing rituals for ailments of the neck, throat and ears are done.

Moon in Gemini: This is the best time to work magick for communications, public relations and writing. One can also work on a change of residence and travel during this time. Shoulders, arms, hands and lungs will benefit the most during healing rituals.

Moon in Cancer: Work magick during this moon for your home and domestic life. Keeping things happy and progressive in these areas. Ailments of the chest and stomach will often be worked on during this moon

Moon in Leo:  Again, authority is key during this moon, much like that of Aries. Power over others, courage and dominance spells are generally successful during a Leo Moon. Healing rituals for the spine, upper back and heart are performed now.

Moon in Virgo: This is the best time to focus on employment, intellectual matters and overall health. Dietary issues can also be addressed. Healing is best focused on the intestinal tract, as well as the nervous system.

Moon in Libra: Court cases, justice, partnerships and unions are great to work on during a Libra Moon. One can also work on spiritual and emotional balance, as well as mental stimulation. Lower back and kidneys will benefit most during healing rituals.

Moon in Scorpio: This is an amazing time to work on psychic growth, secrets and transformation. Sexual matters and overall power are also good to work on during this time. Healing rituals for the reproductive system are done during this Moon.

Moon in Sagittarius: This is the perfect moon to work towards getting yourself published and traveling. Also, truth-be-told spells are easily successful, as are dealings with court cases. The liver, thighs and hips will respond will to healing during this time.

Moon in Capricorn: This is the time to work magick for ambitions, organization, career recognition and all political matters. Get out there and get noticed! Healing rituals for the knees, bones, teeth and skin are done during this time.

Moon in Aquarius: This is the time to work on freedom, creativity, expression and problem solving. Extra sensory abilities can be enhanced during an Aquarius moon, as are friendships. This is the prime time to work on breaking bad habits and being rid of unhealthy addictions. Healing rituals for the blood, calf muscles and ankles are performed now.

Moon in Pisces: This time is perfect for dream work, clairvoyance, telepathy, creative arts and music spell work. Great time for expression of self. The feet and lymph glands can be healed during this time.

The Moon and her Magick . . .

Need a little help or guidance with an issue at hand? Or maybe you need an ear to bend to relieve some stress. Do you follow the moon phases for planting your garden or even cutting your hair?

I am drawn to the path of the Moon. Most likely this has something to do with my gender. Now gents, I am not saying that ya’ll aren’t drawn to her either, but let’s face it – women are so closely connected to the Moon’s phases.

I have always been a night owl and feel a strong connection to the Moon. I enjoy going outside on evenings of the Full Moon and gazing at her for periods of time. She has lit my way, on more than one occasion, when I had no light source. She has helped me find my way out of a thick, dense forest in central Missouri. She has provided me with light for a little nighttime fishing. She has been a friend and confidant and knows some of my innermost secrets. She has been with me all my life and has quietly listened to countless hours of rambling.  For those of us that enjoy a bit of Moon Magick, here are a few ideas about each phase, as well as examples that might prove beneficial.

Our beautiful circular companion has 4 primary phases – First Quarter, Full Moon, Third Quarter and New Moon. Each phase is roughly 7 days each, give or take a few hours.

First Quarter Moon – This moon phases is a time to truly discover one’s strength. A first crisis, if you will. Concentration and a release of personal power are important. This is a time for passion and creativity to take over. It provides vitality, courage, strength and stimulates the heart. Pretty much self-explanatory here – personal power and courage! Use a red candle for any work you do.

moon_phases_diagram

Full Moon – This is a time to do your heart’s desire, of course, but I like to focus on guidance, completion of projects, and the decision-making processes of the previous phase.  Aries is good to incorporate into such spells, especially since Aries is great for quick action and a boost of enthusiasm. Sometimes I need that enthusiasm at the end as my feelings wane a bit.  I have used this time to help me get projects done, as well as ensure that they are all they can be.  Guidance is a good focus – it can help determine where you should put your talents to use next. There is always a strong emphasis on relationship issues during a Full Moon, as well. It’s a great time to find everything within oneself, except loneliness. Share life! Learn to know yourself through action, rather than reflection.  Full Moon

This moon also provides a time for enlightenment and inner wisdoms. It can provide clarity, alertness and eternal optimism. Use yellow candles during this time to benefit wholeheartedly.

New Moon – this is a time when it’s difficult to see her or she is not visible at all. This is a perfect time for finishing up phases and beginning new cycles. New ideas begin to shape, new things pop into your life. The New Moon represents protection – it creates a shield for the beginning of a cycle.

New Moon

A good spell a New Moon would be one for a new venture / employment / business.  I would choose to incorporate Libra for balance, or Aquarius for the social aspect.  Use black candles for any work you do.

Last Quarter Moon – A time to simplify life – a crisis of consciousness and dominating intellect. A time to learn to come out of oneself and be freed by a spiritual vision. If you have personal attachments, this is a great time to be done with them. The moon phase focuses on balancing energies with the mind and the body – as well as helps them flow more easily with life – less stress! Use purple candles during this time – will help to achieve your balance. Use magick that will help you to begin the process of wrapping up projects and seeing them to their finish.

M33f9

Now that the four principle phases have been discussed – not everyone knows that you can benefit from several additional phases – aren’t you the lucky one?

Gibbous Moon – This moon represents a period of reflection. We see the Moon as almost full, but less than – if that makes sense. This is an amazing time to discover the whole of one’s inner life. A time to manifest one’s inner truth, faithfulness to your persona disciplines, take a note of self-worth – are you being true to yourself? Purity and protection are important here – as this time creates great atmosphere for meditation, centering and innocence. White candles will help you achieve more during a Gibbous Moon.

Gibbous Moon

Crescent Moon – the Moon here is barely visible. This is a great time to seek out rare adventures! Do something totally off the wall for you – try something new…enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! Organizational skills will become stronger during this Moon, as well as an individual’s will. This Moon phase represents the zest for life – along with a wee bit of stability. It can help bring forth courage and optimism.

Waxing Crescent

If the moon is Waxing, or growing in size, one would benefit from spells that promote changes and building upon something already there. A new inspiration for a project would really begin to take shape here – as well as any new ideas that you have been holding onto. I generally use this time to brainstorm for my Etsy shop – new candle ideas, new home décor creations. Try to incorporate something Gemini related – as Gemini helps with communication and curiosity. Use an orange candle for this type of work.

Waning CrescentA waning Moon, or one that is shrinking in size, is a great time to banish or be rid of things that are holding you back or blocking your way. I have used this time to help overcome bad habits or remove myself from negative influences. In Hoodoo, this is a great time to open blocked roads. A good sign to help with things of this nature is Cancer – very nurturing and emotional – which can help you overcome obstacles with a sense of comfort. When you are attempting to overcome obstacles or to move past bad or negative habits – it is important to remember to be good to yourself – or the person you are casting for. The one trying to overcome needs to feel hands of support behind them – knowing that if they fall, they will be caught. Again, an orange candle works best.

Disseminating Moon – this is the phase that happens shortly after a Full Moon. After all the illuminating insight you gained during the Full Moon – now is the time to put that newfound knowledge to work for you. Emphasis during this time is communication. New ideas need to be communicated – outwardly. Try to relate creatively, outside your comfort zone and ignite the world with your force. This is another time for great meditative strengthening, vocal expression, sharing. Use a blue candle for the most bang for your buck. Disseminating Moon 75%

balsamic-moon-feb-17-2012-017Balsamic Moon – this moon is just a slim crescent of moon – its 45 degrees behind the Sun and is the last phase before a New Moon. This phase is one of great personal advantage. A time to release ANYTHING left over from old moon cycles. It helps unite and accept yourself, and confront your deepest fears during this time. You have the ability to draw lovers to you and remove past hurts and deep sorrows. It’s soothing, serene and helps eliminate animosity. Use pink candles when working during this phase.

So there you have it – I have had great success for years when trying attune myself to the Moon phase. The key here is to be open – I have also learned that if you need something specific and immediately, and find yourself in the wrong Moon phase, just reconsider your wording for the spell. Transition it, and the spell casting can still work in your favor. The Deities are always listening – they are making sure YOU are, as well.

BIG ash

By Theresa Crouse – SurvivoPedia

If you’re going to be burning wood, you’re going to have a ton (maybe literally!) of ash by the end of the winter, so what on earth are you going to do with it all? Re-use it, that’s what! There are a ton of uses for wood ash, and we’re going to touch on a few of those today.

Wood ash is extremely alkaline and contains potassium (potash) and calcium, which makes it great for several different purposes around the farm. It also likely contains sulfur, phosphorus, sodium, zinc, manganese, iron, copper, cobalt, magnesium and molybdenum, all of which are great for your plants depending upon your type of soil. That’s just the tip of the iceberg though. Let’s talk ash!

1. Tanning Hides

If you’ve ventured into the land of tanning at all, you probably know that brains are a common method for naturally…

Which would you rather eat?

Side by side comparison….

Nom Nom!

Kelly and I are preppers, if nothing else. Now that doesn’t mean we buy into every conspiracy going, but it means we believe in being prepared. Prepared for what? Anything!

Eventually, our plan is to go completely off the grid and thrive with only those items that we can grow, cultivate, and create ourselves. In preparation for this, we are starting to play with recipes, as well as come up with our own.

Our first attempt at home made cottage cheese happened yesterday!

Kelly thought that Alton Brown’s recipe sounded pretty easy and was a good place to start. Below is the process at each stage – hope you enjoy!

The initial recipe calls for bringing a gallon of skim milk up to 120 degrees F. We opted for whole milk (I know, more fattening, but oh so good!)

Cottage Cheese 1

Once temp has reached 120 degrees (be sure and use a candy thermometer to get accurate temp), remove it from heat source and slowly add 3/4 cup vinegar. This is the process by which you will curdle the milk and create the curd.

Cottage Cheese 2

Cottage Cheese 3Keep in mind, the more you stir after adding the vinegar, the smaller your curd will be. We stirred it a bit, just until we could see curds beginning to form. This allows the curd to separate from the whey. Cover and allow to sit for about 30 minutes. While it’s cooling, prepare a colander and a tea towel or cheese cloth – you will be pouring the mixture into the cloth.

After cooling, Kelly poured the mixture into the colander and allowed it to drain for 4 or 5 minutes. Cottage Cheese 4

Cottage Cheese 5

After it has drained, wash the curds with cold water. Start gathering up the edges of the towel and twist to form a ball. Slowly work the curds in the towel and squeeze – this will help remove moisture from the curd.

Now, transfer the curd to a small bowl – and season to your liking! We added salt and a bit of pepper. If you stir the curd around, it will break it up a bit. When you are ready to serve it, you can add a little heavy cream. Kelly and I do like runny cottage cheese, so we opted for just a touch of heavy cream.cottage Cheese 6

I am an eternal skeptic… so I was a bit leary of how homemade cottage cheese would taste. I swear, I will probably never eat store bought again! This was so much better! You could actually taste the cheesiness of the curd, not additives and bizarre flavorings!

So, again, I ask you – which one would you rather eat?

Nom Nom!

Wheels of Color . . .

Candles, Color, Conjure, Craft, Hoodoo, Magick, Paganism, Philosophies, Spells

For centuries, colors have been used for magickal purposes. They can create, change or enhance a mood; bring about an emotional response; keep one grounded to activity at hand – just to name a few.

Each pantheon and philosophy seem to have their own ideas of what different colors mean. But, this is my blog ~ I am a Witch of Chaos ~ and so, my colors may or may not line up directly with how you perceive their influences.

powder01

Black: ~ Spellbreaking, banishing, jinxing, hexing, removing crossed conditions, mourning

Brown: ~ Earth, grounding, caution, court cases, animal magick

Green: ~ Money, luck, gambling, crop success, business success, employment

Blue: ~ Peace, wisdom, harmony, children

Purple: ~ Mastery, power, honor, protection, keeping evil away, control

Red: ~ Sexual magick, domination, energy, lust, passion, vigor

Pink: ~ Love, affection, romance, attraction, reconciliation

Orange: ~ Stimulation, friendship, change, road opener, removing blockages

Yellow: ~ Concentration, creativity, general success

Gold: ~ Gambling, male power and vitality

Grey: ~ Meditation, clarification, neutrality

White: ~ Blessings, purity, spirit, abundance

These colors correspond greatly to many European magickal traditions, as well as Hoodoo and conjure candle work. Interpretation can always be left up to the user, however. Just because it doesn’t fit someone else’s category, doesn’t mean it’s wrong!  But more about that later!

Gulf of Mexico

Anniversary, Beach, Corpus Christi, Day of the Dead, Dia de los Muertos, Flamingo, Gulf of Mexico, November 1, Ocean, Photography

Hello People of the Page!

First, let me apologize for the delay in writing. After the lengthy weekend in Corpus Christi, I have been battling with the time change most of this week. It always takes me a bit to get used to it – I know it’s mind over matter, but still!

The weekend with Kelly was amazing. The evening of our anniversary, we were in Rockport, TX – right on the Gulf. We ate at a quaint little place called The Boiling Pot – that serves pretty much nothing but crab boils. Our favorite! Delicious, not expensive at all, and that atmosphere was great.

After dinner, we took a quick walk down to the pier and watched the “false” sunset that often appears out over the water – the colors were bold and beautiful – pinks, blues, purples, and greys… and I finally had pelicans in my view again. (Pelicans happen to be my favorite birds!)  Looking down in to the water, I was able to see a large school(?) of jelly fish! This was another first for me. I will try to add some photos later on – they are on my phone.

We wound up driving to Mustang Island State Park which is part of the chain of islands that creates the barrier for Corpus Christi. The weather was beautiful – clear skies the first night with about a half moon. We walked along the beach in our bare feet, chased tiny crabs, squawked at the gulls and built a little fire. It was perfect.

The following morning, I grabbed the camera and walked the few feet to the water. First discovery was a small child’s flip flop that had seen some wear. I took a few photos – thinking it would be an interesting subject. I also snapped a few photos of the waves as they crashed in the early morning light. The Gulf of Mexico is my favorite body of water.

Child's PlayGulf 1

Later Saturday, we visited the Dia de Los Muertos festival in Corpus. Sadly, it was quite disappointing. Kelly and I believe that festivals that are originally for honoring someone or something should remain so. This festival… was all about commercialization. It was about making the almighty dollar – as a vendor. It had absolutely NOTHING to do with honoring the heritage, the ancestors, anyone that came before. We were sadly disappointed. We did people watch for a bit – but if you travel to Corpus expecting to witness an authentic Dia de Los Muertos gathering, don’t bother. There are numerous other areas you can visit – or better yet, stay home and honor the tradition in your own way.

The highlight were the masks and this cute skeleton that was set out.

MasksSkeleton Flamingo

We spent one more night on the beach – where we nearly froze our butts off. The temperature dropped that night to somewhere in the low 40’s – the winds gusted in off the water around 25 – 30 mph and blew sand in our face most of the night. Sometime before midnight, we made the decision to jump in the cab of the pickup and wait out the night. Always an adventure with us!

All in all – it was an amazing weekend. I am happy, thankful and proud to be Kelly’s wife. I found a quote by Mark Twain that I would like to leave you with. He said,

“Love seems the swiftest, but it is the slowest of all growths. No man or woman really knows what perfect love is until they have been married a quarter of a century.”

Kelly and I are 1/5th of the way there! ❤
